My Pure Romance Story (so far)
If you told me a few years ago that I would be coming into strangers' living rooms to talk about sex, I never would have believed you! I could hardly talk about this topic with my husband, let alone with complete strangers. I had heard about romance parties and my girlfriends kept bugging me about hosting one. However, I always chickened out because didn’t know any local consultants and was nervous about inviting a stranger over to do the party (I just didn't know what to expect).
Through this process of thinking about it and chickening out, I did manage to find the Pure Romance website and was intrigued by how tastefully everything was presented. My husband also apparently found the website because fun packages started to show up on my doorstep...and all I will say about that is - HELLO - whole new world!
At the time, I was working a demanding job in the nonprofit sector as a lobbyist. It was rewarding but exhausting. When I wasn’t working, I had little energy for friends or family. It wasn’t the life I had envisioned and after seven years, I was burning out.
I had insomnia a lot and so late one night I was poking around on the Pure Romance website (once again debating whether I should host a party), and clicked the “Sell Pure Romance” button just for fun. I watched testimonials from some of the top consultants in the company. They were classy, intelligent, strong women who frankly, looked like they were having a lot more fun than I was.
My wheels started turning. Maybe this is something I could do for fun on the side – as a diversion from my stressful day job? Maybe I could leave my day job? Do I dare even consider that? I had a couple girlfriends who were planning bachelorette parties...hmmm….
But I was nervous about what my friends would think, how my family would feel, what my husband would say, and how I would handle running into women I know professionally. Mostly, I was my own worst enemy. The truth is that I still had preconceived notions about the type of women who do this kind of thing.
However, the more I learned about the company, the more I wanted to be a part of it. In addition to the fun parties and product line, I was touched by the Sensuality, Sexuality, Survival program to help women who have undergone cancer treatment rediscover their sensuous selves post chemotherapy treatment. The Patty Brisben Foundation, dedicated to researching women’s sexual health issues also struck a chord. This is a company that gives back a tremendous amount to the community, and coming out of the nonprofit sector, I found this very meaningful.
So when my tax return arrived, I decided to just go for it. At the very least, I figured I could do my girlfriends’ bachelorette parties to pay for my kit, then have a pretty nice buying discount to keep myself and my friends in the good stuff. I signed up and bought the Silver kit.
My husband thought I had lost my mind - until my kit arrived! When he saw how excited I was (and learned about my new buying discount) he got on board pretty quickly. Overall, I was surprised by how well my new venture was received. Those I care about were overwhelmingly supportive. A few were surprised, but those who know me best weren't surprised at all. They learned a long time ago that I like to keep life interesting, and refuse to be pigeonholed by myself or anyone else.
Since my very first party where I was floored to sell $600 in products to just a handful of women, I haven’t looked back! I quickly saw the income potential with Pure Romance and was having so much fun that I decided to leave my day job nine months after signing up – something I never would have had the courage or financial flexibility to do a couple of years ago. I love being self-employed and can't imaging going back to a traditional job. I now earn more as a consultant than I did working full-time! I love helping women explore new ways to open the lines of communication in their intimate relationships. I also love mentoring an amazing team of strong and talented women and helping them achieve success in this fabulous business. It’s definitely not for everyone…but for those of us who didn’t come here to be ordinary, it’s an extraordinary ride!
